About Tim

Tim Walters believes in a holistic approach to teaching music: Equip students to perform at their highest levels in various styles of music including jazz, pop, religious and classical-making sure his students are able to fluently read music and understand and execute the concept of playing by ear.

Tim was a music major at the University of South Carolina where he majored in saxophone, choral studies (piano emphasis) and completed a B.A. degree in music. He was a member of the top, auditioned ensembles at USC, including the wind ensemble, symphonic band, Left Bank jazz ensemble and concert choir. He has been the pianist for several middle and high school choirs and musical productions. He has also been the accompanist for several South Carolina college concert choirs.

Tim has also been an alto saxophonist on bands backing nationally and internationally known jazz artists, artists such as The Temptations, The Four Tops and the Barnum & Bailey Circus. In addition to teaching privately, he has been the accompanist for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir, Allen University Choral Clinic and the musician/music director at Columbia area churches.

Many of his music students have gone on to have successful academic careers, complete music degrees, teach music on various levels-including college and sing and play professionally. Other students have gone on to be successful in their chosen field of study-education, medicine, banking etc., and have expressed to him their appreciation of having the ability to sit at a piano and to de-stress to their hearts content.

He has studied with renowned musicians/teachers including: Saxophone – Roger Pemberton, Eric Ohlsson, Douglas Graham and Ken Foerch. Flute- Constance Lane. Piano-Joseph Rackers, John Williams and Harriet Zimmerman. Organ-Dr. /David Lowry.

While in high school, Tim Walters also did music studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY; the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts in Greenville, SC; and he was first chair, alto saxophone, on the South Carolina All State band for three years, ending his final year in high school.

Mr. Walters is an example of the best any individualist Music Teacher can offer. Although soft spoken and kind he does not compromise on the correct way to play music. I am thankful and grateful for the time and efforts spent in greatly improving My daughter Angel’s piano playing ability.
